Type 301 stainless steel is a commonly used Austenitic stainless with higher strain-hardening. It offers good corrosion resistance, high strength, and elevated carbon to allow for cold working to a variety of tempers. It can be obtained in the 1/4 hard, 1/2 hard, fully hard and extra hard tempers. It retains sufficient ductility under 1/2 hardening conditions to be formed by rolling or bending into aircraft parts, structural parts of buildings, and especially railway carriage parts. Cold rolled slabs hardened by 3/4 to full hardening should be used for parts requiring high wear resistance and elasticity. Type 301L is the low carbon version of the 301 stainless steel, The typical application of 301 and 301L including gaskets, springs, shims, fasteners, tools, blades, automotive parts, aerospace components, kitchen utensils and Tableware, electrical components and others.

Grade 301 is a cheaper alternative to the traditional high-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as grade 304. Grade 301L stainless steel is a low carbon steel which is ideal for improved ductility and when heavy sections are to be welded. Unlike welds in grade 301, grade 301L does not need to be annealed for maximum corrosion resistance.
